It's throwback Thursday and we would like to share with you one of the items we have on display in our reception ‘The BSP Pocket Book’.
This was a must-have document in a world before electronic communications became the norm. With industry-specific advice, helpful calculations, and other general information on the art of pile driving. One key piece of information which was included was the ‘Hiley Formula’, used for predicting pile capacity from the driving record. This method was popularised by the BSP Alumni, Alfred Hiley, who was BSP’s Director in the 1920s. Alfred’s name is still associated with pile driving prediction to this day across the industry.
Although the advent of wave-equation computation has made that art more accurate in the electronic age, it is still a handy ‘go-to’ at times.
